The beginning of a new year is a great time to pause and reflect on the previous year’s accomplishments and shortcomings. The idea of making resolutions to improve oneself is a wonderful idea, unfortunately, many of us give up on our aspirations for self-improvement by February.

Here are some tips on how to make your resolutions last:

  1. Be Realistic. It is really hard to change behaviors that have been engrained into our daily lives. For example, falling behind on notebook organization is painful, yet it doesn’t stop this from happening over and over again. Setting unattainable goals will leave you feeling frustrated and you will end up giving up completely.
  2. Slow down. Now that you have chosen realistic behaviors to change, allow yourself time to make the adjustment. If you are planning on being more diligent when it comes to your notebook, allow yourself an hour at the end of each day to gather your thoughts and summarize the day’s progress. Once you are all caught up on organizing your notebook, use this time to catch up on current literature.
  3. Link your goals. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to fix a big problem. Break down each goal into two or three parts so that it seems more attainable. The positive feeling that comes from finishing something will fuel you to beat the odds and endure past February!
  4. Declare your resolutions. It is easy to forget about your resolutions when you are the only one who knows about them. Accountability to others can drive us to stick with our resolutions. If you are feeling like giving up you can use social media to share your goals and gain the support of those in your community.
